The Best Kindle Covers For My Kindle 2
I took the plunge! I have pre-ordered mine new Kindle 2 two weeks ago. My new expected Kindle arrives on Tuesday February 24th (according to the shipping tracker). I am already convinced I want now to find the best cover for it. There are several places, also there is a fairly good discussion of the different kinds of covers available, but I am not sure about what's the best.
Now is available a wide variety of Kindle 2 accessories, including new covers from Cole Haan, Patagonia, M-edge, GelaSkins, Vangoddy, Belkin and more.
For example: Cole Haan has many Hand-Woven Leather Covers for Kindle 2 that are indeed stylish, although they are rather pricey. This custom covers, made exclusively in India of hand-stained New Zealand leather.
I should say that they are not for those who would rather have something mass produced in China or for those who don't care to stand out from the crowd or draw attention. They are absolutely beautiful! I figured many might start ordering it. There is a strong chance that you will be quite unique as it is are rather pricey. For those of you who don't know, Cole Haan is amazing and is actually worth the price you would pay for their stuff. I have one of their purses and about 5 pairs of shoes. The purse is the softest thing I've ever touched and the shoes make my feet sing. Seriously, their leather is like butter.
Patagonia Book Case for Kindle 2, is nice, but I think it needs handle, like a wristlet purse.The Case is designed with padded, internal compartments to keep the Kindle 2, the power adapter, the clip light, and any additional accessories tangle-free. Belkin case made of high-grade leather and neoprene fabric in stylish black color. I think that is a wonderful case, but there has to be a better cover than the Belkin for a wonderful product like my new Kindle 2.
Next, M-Edge Kindle covers they look lovely. I have an older M-Edge case for my kindle 1 and I do wish they'd change the closure. I wish the closure was magnetic instead of just a flap - like some of the journals you can buy in bookstores.
The new M-Edge luxurious leather Jackets allows access to all ports and buttons on the Kindle 2 and are is compatible with the M-Edge e-Luminator booklight. It has a solid front and back construction and can be used as a bookstand for upright, hands-free reading. My friend purchased the red case and I have to say it is VERY nice. It is a really nice soft buttery leather, the smell of leather alone is wonderful, the feel of it in my hands is sensual - I like it a lot, but I would prefer other brand in leather.

As technology has continued to evolve over the years so has the everyday book. But how does one compare to the other?
Is the readability of the book compromised?
Readability is a big one because we all know that staring at a computer screen is very bad for your eyes and essentially the Kindle is a little computer screen. However, with the new technology that they use on the Kindle 2, it does not hurt your eyes. The Kindle 2's page layout is the exact same as a regular book's layout with one exception, you can make the print bigger or smaller with the push of a button.
Are you able to get lost in a Kindle 2 like you can with a regular book?
When I read a book I get completely engulfed in it. After the first few pages I don't even realize that I'm turning pages or reading words. It is like a movie playing in my head. That feature alone is why I love reading so much. It offers the ability to relax and escape reality for a little while.
Amazingly, with the Kindle 2 I am able to get lost in the book, however, it takes me much longer to be immersed in the story and I don't stay that way for as long. Some of that might simply be because reading a book and turning the pages is so automatic because that is how I've always read a book. Pushing a button is not a natural way to read but I'm sure that over time it will become so.
How does buying a book on Kindle 2 compare to buying a regular book?
When you decide you want a new book you have to get in the car, drive the store, find the book, go through the checkout, and drive back home. If you're very lucky it will only take about 30 minutes but somehow I'm usually not that lucky and with kids, I normally only have a short amount of free time. In this regard I love the Kindle 2 because I can pick my book, pay for it, and have it downloaded in 60 seconds.
What about the price of the book? Is it about the same?
A new release hardback book will cost you about $20.00 and a paperback will cost around $7. A new release downloaded is $10.00. So if you read a lot of new releases it will be cheaper to buy the book on Kindle 2. However, if you decide you want to read a book all you need to do is go to the store and buy it but, if you want to download a book to the Kindle 2 you have to buy the Kindle 2 first and that's going to run you around $400.00.

When I read a book I get completely engulfed in it. After the first few pages I don't even realize that I'm turning pages or reading words. It is like a movie playing in my head. That feature alone is why I love reading so much. It offers the ability to relax and escape reality for a little while.
Amazingly, with the Kindle 2 I am able to get lost in the book, however, it takes me much longer to be immersed in the story and I don't stay that way for as long. Some of that might simply be because reading a book and turning the pages is so automatic because that is how I've always read a book. Pushing a button is not a natural way to read but I'm sure that over time it will become so.
How does buying a book on Kindle 2 compare to buying a regular book?
When you decide you want a new book you have to get in the car, drive the store, find the book, go through the checkout, and drive back home. If you're very lucky it will only take about 30 minutes but somehow I'm usually not that lucky and with kids, I normally only have a short amount of free time. In this regard I love the Kindle 2 because I can pick my book, pay for it, and have it downloaded in 60 seconds.
What about the price of the book? Is it about the same?
A new release hardback book will cost you about $20.00 and a paperback will cost around $7. A new release downloaded is $10.00. So if you read a lot of new releases it will be cheaper to buy the book on Kindle 2. However, if you decide you want to read a book all you need to do is go to the store and buy it but, if you want to download a book to the Kindle 2 you have to buy the Kindle 2 first and that's going to run you around $400.00.

A Look at E-book Formats and E-book-Readers
A lots of big-boys have entered the market of e-book-reader technology and a war has broken out. It's a war to develop the most commonplace and universally accepted e-book format. Among these we have:
LRF - Sony's proprietary format.
AZW - Amazon's proprietary format.
MOBI - Mobipocket; a more widely accepted format across the board.
PDF - Adobe's universal format.
The Sony Reader is one of the only e-book-reader that doesn't support the widely available Mobipocket format. The reason for this is that Sony hope to make a profit by selling e-books in their own proprietary format to its customers. This is a risky tactic as they run the risk of loosing many potential customers not willing to limit themselves to Sony's e-book collection. Amazon however have taken a more open minded approach by giving their Kindle device Mobipocket support as well as support for their proprietary format, AZW. Generally speaking, when considering a purchase of an e-book-reader device, the more supported formats the better. In this article I aim to look at the various advantages and disadvantages of e-book formats.
Sony Reader Format (LRF)
LRF is Sony's proprietary e-book file format. The Sony Reader devices allows three levels of zoom for LRF e-books. E-books of this format can be purchased from Sony's own website which boasts thousands of best-selling titles. Unfortunately this format is only available with the Sony Readers and therefore the e-book collection isn't as large as it is for other formats on offer.
Amazon Kinder Format (AZW)
The AZW format is Amazon's proprietary file format. Unlike Sony, Amazon have taken the surprising step of allowing support for other commercial formats on their reader device. For Amazon this may be a case of shooting themselves in the foot, or alternatively a stroke of genius and a missed opportunity for Sony. Amazon have their own e-book store in which they sell AZW books. Being the largest book supplier on the Internet, Amazon certainly know a thing or two about this market and should feel quite confident going up again Sony in this way.
Mobipocket Format (MOBI)
Unlike the other two mentioned formats, the MOBI file format wasn't developed for any specific device. Instead it was made for a specific piece of software. The Mobipocket reader software is free for download and distribution. This is what makes the format so appealing. Money is made purely through book sales. This philosophy seems to have more future than that of Sony and Amazon with their proprietary formats. Amazon however seem to have recognised this and allowed the format on to their devices - a step that Sony haven't taken. In this digital age of so many different devices, it is in the interests of the consumer to have standards: the Mobipocket format seems to be establishing itself as this standard.
Adobe Reader Format (PDF)
It would be a brave manufacturer who released a device without support for the PDF format. Over the years PDF has really established itself the number one digital text format. There are a number of issues with this format however that I hope to clarify here. Firstly, the philosophy of the PDF format is to display text on screen exactly as it will display in print. The problems arise when a text was designed for A4 print. There are currently no e-book-reading devices with an A4 screen size and as such, PDF documents on these devices will not display as they were intended. This also leads to reduced readability and sometimes even zero readability. There are a number of third party programs designed to tackle this problem. For the Sony Reader there are packages that convert the PDF files into the proprietary LRF format with minimum loss of quality. It's important to note that the Amazon Kindle doesn't support the PDF format at all, they do however provide "experimental" software that should convert a PDF file to the proprietary AZW format.

So when considering purchasing an e-book-Reader device, research is everything. An important question to ask oneself is this: what are the e-book formats I use the most? You should look at the various e-book stores to see if they offer the kinds of books that you might buy. Amazon Kindle Vs Sony Reader - Which EBook Reader Should You Buy For 2008?
Trying to choose between the Amazon Kindle vs. the Sony Reader is no easy task! This is made even more difficult by the fact that there are fans on both sides of the argument. The best thing for you to do is to look at the facts for yourself to make your decision.
The first thing to consider when comparing these devices is the price. The price is around the same for both ebook readers. However, Sony's newest model, the PRS700, is priced at just under $400-$40 more than the Kindle which is currently at $359. While neither version is cheap, the Kindle wins out on the price front.
Another very important feature when comparing the Kindle vs. the Sony Reader 700 is the availability of content. In this category, the Kindle beats the Sony Reader hands down. At the time of this writing, there are over 190,000 books available at the Kindle Store as well as today's most popular magazines, newspapers, and blogs. This reduces the possibility of strain on your eyes and makes you feel more like you're reading a "regular" book.
In terms of what these devices look like, the Sony Reader easily trumps the Kindle. The biggest gripe about the Kindle is that the device is plain ugly! It looks like a device designed in the late 90's. The Sony Reader 700, on the other hand, has a slick black "iPodish" look to it. It is what you would expect for a design of a device in 2008.
Speaking of design, the Sony Reader display is a touch screen while the Kindle is not. While this is a great step forward for ebook readers and would seem to give the Sony the advantage, it seems to have affected the overall quality of the Sony's display. Sony had to add the touch screen layer on top of their e-ink screen layer. This means that some of the contrast and "real book" feel that is noticeable on the Amazon Kindle are missing. That doesn't mean that books are unreadable, it just means that if you were to compare the displays on these two devices side-by-side, you'd probably be able to tell the Kindle has better contrast and is a bit sharper.
Both of these ebook readers allow you to make the font size of the book you are reading bigger. This is a really great thing if you have a hard time reading print that is too small. One slight advantage that the Sony Reader 700 has over the Amazon Kindle in terms of readability is the LED backlight for reading in low-light environments. On the surface this sounds great-no more need for a clip-on light but not so fast. Reviews of the Sony Reader have reported that the light does a poor job of lighting the screen and in some cases makes it harder to read because it affects the contrast and visibility of the text.
Since no one wants to carry around a big, bulky device, you'll also be pleased to know that both units only weigh in at about 10 ounces. That is about the weight of some paperbacks! The right side only has a control to advance the page while the left side has controls to advance the page or return to the previous page. Therefore, to turn a page back you are forced to use your left hand. I think that page forward and back controls should be on both sides of the device. Adding to my confusion was a control labeled "Back" on the right side, which I would hit in error trying to go back a page. This control actually took me back to a different menu. Another general complaint made by many users about the Kindle is the proprietary format of the ebooks from Amazon. The device is meant to steer you to make purchases from only Amazon. This is understandable from the company's point of view, but it does mean that ebooks bought through Amazon can only be viewed on their device. If you decide in the future to buy an ebook reading device from another company, then you would not have access on that new non-Kindle device to any ebooks you purchased from Amazon. Although designed to be an Amazon device, the Kindle can actually be used to read ebooks from other sources. Another major leap for Amazon is how eBooks are distributed. Originally, Amazon had planned to distribute eBooks over Wi-Fi, but that would require customers to find a WiFi hot spot. Eventually, Amazon chose Sprint's high speed EVDO network. Using the technology called WhisperNet, customers can download eBooks anywhere that there's a cell phone connection. If the high speed EVDO network is not available, the Amazon Kindle switches back to the slower 1x speed.
